Mobile app interface driving business growth in 2025

Voice technology has been quietly sitting in our homes and pockets for years—but its long-term impact is still under-discussed and often overlooked. Sure, we’ve all said, “Hey Siri” or “OK Google,” but most of us still think of voice interfaces as limited to setting timers or asking for the weather. And in many ways, that’s true—today’s mainstream voice assistants are still basic.

But the landscape is shifting. With the rise of conversational AI, the foundations are finally in place for Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) to become more than just a novelty. As natural language processing gets smarter, voice is becoming a more viable input method for everyday apps, services, and experiences.

VUIs are no longer about trying to replace screens—they’re about offering an alternative interaction layer that can remove friction, improve accessibility, and unlock new ways to engage.

What Is a VUI, Really?

A Voice User Interface allows users to interact with digital systems using spoken language. It typically combines:

  • Speech recognition (turning speech into text)

  • Natural language understanding (interpreting intent)

  • Voice output (responding to the user)

Current implementations include:

  • Virtual assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa

  • In-car voice navigation systems

  • Smart home speakers and appliances

  • Voice-guided fitness and meditation apps

Most of these use cases are fairly limited in scope. They’re good at completing short tasks but struggle with anything involving context, nuance, or memory. That’s the gap AI is now starting to close.

Where Voice Adds Value Today

Voice isn’t right for every app—but in the right context, it’s incredibly effective. The best use cases tend to fall into three categories:

  • Hands-full moments – e.g. cooking, driving, exercising

  • Accessibility – for users with visual or mobility challenges

  • Speed & efficiency – quick updates, reminders, or information requests

Rather than replacing traditional interfaces, voice often complements them—particularly when combined with visual displays. Think voice prompts paired with on-screen confirmation or results.

The Gap Between Potential and Reality

Voice tech is evolving but it hasn’t caught up to our expectations just yet. Most existing VUIs follow rigid command formats and can’t handle real dialogue. They often miss nuance, ignore tone, and forget what you just said.

But with the integration of large language models, that’s changing. Tools like ChatGPT are showing us how voice could evolve— enabling more dynamic, context-aware interactions. We’re still in the early days, but the path is clear.

So, how should businesses respond?

Start by recognising the potential of voice, not as a gimmick, but as a strategic layer of interaction that can grow in sophistication over time.

Use Cases Worth Watching

As voice capabilities improve, we’re seeing new industries explore VUIs in more meaningful ways:

Healthcare

Apps like Nuance DAX Copilot are enabling doctors to document patient consultations using voice, cutting down admin time and improving focus during appointments.

Logistics & fieldwork

Honeywell Voice and Theatro provide voice-driven task management for warehouse workers and frontline staff, improving accuracy and safety on the move.

Fitness & wellness

The Ultrahuman Ring Air and apps like Fitbod are beginning to incorporate voice cues to guide workouts and track progress during sessions, hands-free.

Hospitality

Marriott is piloting Alexa for Hospitality in select locations, allowing guests to control lights, blinds, temperature and room service via voice commands.

Fast Food Drive Throughs

Several chains here in Australia such as Hungry Jacks and KFC are trialling VUIs to take customer orders, reduce wait times, and create more consistent service.

These examples illustrate that voice isn’t just for virtual assistants it’s becoming a valuable layer of interaction across many industries. As capabilities grow, businesses that treat VUIs as a meaningful part of their digital strategy will be better positioned to innovate and lead.

How Businesses Can Jump on This Emerging Tech

VUI is one of those technologies whose future impact is still flying under the radar but it won’t stay that way for long. Right now, it’s a space with low competition and high potential. For established businesses in particular, it presents an opportunity to stand out, deepen engagement, and lead on accessibility and innovation.

Of course, not every app or platform needs voice. The key is making sure it solves a real problem and that it’s technically feasible. That’s why conversations with experienced product teams and developers are critical early on.

For businesses considering the leap, here are a few things to think about:

  • Talk with an experienced app agency to explore what’s possible and what’s practical

  • Identify the core problem voice could solve (e.g. speed, safety, convenience, accessibility)

  • Think about your users’ context and when and where might voice reduce friction?

  • Consider your long-term product vision and whether voice fits strategically into it

  • Start small but plan ahead — a well-executed single use case can set the foundation for future layers

In our view, businesses that start exploring VUI now will be the ones ahead of the curve when the tech matures.

Final Thought: Voice as a Quiet Advantage

Voice interfaces aren’t revolutionary yet—but they are evolving. And for businesses willing to experiment now, they can offer a meaningful edge in user experience.

Whether it’s reducing friction, increasing accessibility, or just creating a smoother way to interact, VUIs are worth a second look. Not because they’ll replace the touchscreen—but because they offer something it can’t: freedom from it.
